Cross Country Skiing Trails - Northern Ontario Canada
Auld Reekie Lodge offers access to cross country skiing and untamed "Adventure". Trails are not groomed for cross country skiing however, there are hundreds of paths created by the snow machines. Local snowmobilers often break their own seldom used trails through the forests and across the ponds, marshes and lakes.
Skiing here provides one with a higher level of adventure. We will help you prepare for your daily ski trips. We offer you a pristine, unregulated and breathtaking environment to explore on skis but some common sense planning is in order.
The assumptions used to plan a day of cross country skiing in our environment are these. The trails are not necessarily marked. One can easily become disoriented for a time or simply lost and it gets dark very early. Cross country skiers habitually dress lightly and cross country boots are notoriously poor at keeping your feet warm. You have to plan for the unexpected and that means planning to stay warm. Each skier should have a suitable backpack to carry some extra emergency supplies including an additional overcoat. At a minimum each skier should have a supply of energy bars, a one litre thermos, a compass, some safety matches in a water proof container, a cold feet solution like extra socks and some kind of collapsible boot that can be used to warm your feet during rest stops and each skier should have an extra pair of winter mitts (not gloves.
